Here's what we'll be covering this term in Squirrels Class

English

Welcome to 2026! This term, we will be focusing on “Communities and Cultures”.

Our story will be "Postman Bear" which is about a bear who invites his friend to a birthday party. The children will be making invitations to our New Year party, making marks to represent their names. We will be learning all about letters and posting them. Some of the children will be reading and writing letters too. We will be sharing books about the other animals in the story and encouraging the children to engage by opening the flaps.

Maths

We will be looking at numbers in practical situations. We will start this by talking about the New Year 2026 and will be singing songs that include a countdown, encouraging the children to learn about counting backwards from 10.  We will use numbers when cooking and when counting out plates and cups for parties and role-play picnics.  We will think about our addresses and the numbers on our front doors, so that we can post a letter to ourselves.

We will continue to match, sort and categorise objects through posting games. We will be looking at shapes and matching these to their names and the number of sides they have.

Topics that we will be covering across the half-term

PSHE – we will be supported to develop relationships with our friends.  We will be sharing photos of each other and thinking about what makes us special.   We will then think about our families and other people who help us in our school community and in the local area.

DT – will be about cooking and will tie in with our story "Bear makes a cake for his birthday", and we will be making cakes and other party food!

Computing – we will introduce the children to using the keyboard and basic typing skills.

Science – in our Science investigations, we will explore how to keep warm, which ties in well with the weather this season.

RE – we will be thinking about what it means to be part of a community.

PE

We have PE every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

This year we will be having three shorter PE sessions on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  The children will not need a PE kit.

We will be joining the rest of the school in taking part in a dance project, in conjunction with The Royal Ballet.

Homework

Please share the videos that are added to Dojo, to allow your children to become familiar with the stories, rhymes and signs we will be using each week.
