SCHOOL BASED PROVISIONS
Otters and Kestrels
Otters and Kestrels are specialist provisions, established by the school to support students with complex needs (particularly learning/ ASD/ communication difficulties). Both classes have a highly structured, nurturing environment, where children benefit from smaller groups and a high ratio of adults. The curriculum is developed to meet the specific needs of the children within the group.
Otters Class
Our teachers are Miss McGrath and Mrs Bale
*****
Our teaching assistants are Mrs Khanom, Mrs Avram and Mrs Mangion
Here's what we'll be covering this term in Otters:
Theme
Our theme for this half-term is “Communities and Cultures”.
English
| This term in English we are looking at stories with familiar settings. Our chosen book is ‘Peace at last’ by Jill Murphy. |

Maths

This half-term we will be focusing on numbers and using and applying within 10. Every lesson starts with a counting song. We want the children to understand the value of a number, so some of the children will explore numbers in ‘messy maths’. Other children will be learning to subitise to ten, will look at 1 more or less than a number, and begin addition and subtraction.
PSHE
In PSHE, we will be supported to develop relationships with our friends. We will be sharing photos of each other and thinking about what makes us special. We will then think about our families and other people who help us in our school community and in the local area.
Topics that we will be covering across the half-term
Science – We will be learning the characteristics of materials.
History – We will be learning about people who help us – past and present
Art – Our topic is ‘let’s sculpt it’ and we will be making sculptures.
RE – We will be exploring different beliefs
PE
We have PE every Wednesday and Friday
In PE, we will be focusing on Gymnastics and Football, working on balance and co-ordination, gross motor skills and ball skills.
All children should have the correct PE kit (as per the school guidelines). All clothes should be labelled to ensure that they can be returned to the correct child if they are mislaid. No earrings or jewellery are to be worn on PE days.
Homework
Please practice the weekly core words – posted on Dojo and use your Core word boards at home.
Some children will also bring home reading books.
Planned Trips
There are no planned trips
Dates for your diary
Please look at Dojo every day for all the exciting activities and events that are being planned for your children.

Local Authority Based Provision
The Redwood Unit
Squirrels and Foxes
In the Summer of 2023, we opened a local authority provision at Surrey Street Primary School, for children with complex learning needs. The unit caters for children with levels well below expected levels (at least half their chronological age).
All children in the provision must have an EHCP issued by the local authority.
