Here’s what we’ll be covering over this term in Year 6:

English

In English we will be learning to write persuasive speeches to be House Captains and studying the book ‘Wonder’ which we will write diary entries, letters and chapters about.

 

Maths

In maths we will be focussing on place value of numbers up to 10 million and learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide using mental and written methods.

Topics that we will be covering across the term

Science - we will be learning about electricity

Geography - we will be learning about coasts

DT - we will be learning to sew

RE – we will be learning about places of religious significance

Computing – we will be studying networks

PE

Our PE days are Monday and Friday.

In PE we will be playing netball. Some children will also be learning to swim. Parents whose children will be undertaking swimming lessons have been contacted privately.

Children are now allowed to come to school in their PE kits on days when they have PE lessons. However, if your child is swimming, they will come to school in normal school uniform with their PE kit underneath.

Homework

As we are preparing the children for their end of primary school assessments and their transition to high school, we do have slightly higher homework expectations than they may have experienced before. We check this every week and any homework not completed will be completed during breaks and lunchtimes at school with support from staff.

This is the homework children will be expected to do:

  • Children need to read at home at least 3 times per week and log this on BoomReader.
  • Children need to learn their spellings each week.
  • Children will be given maths homework on Mondays (starting mid-September) and this is due the following Monday.
  • Children need to complete 21 minutes of TT Rockstars.

Other

As you may be aware, the children will be doing SATs tests in May. We will be doing lots of work in school in order to prepare the children for these, but it makes a huge difference if you read every day with your child at home and encourage them to practise their spellings and complete their homework on time.
