Guided Reading
To teach children specific reading and comprehension skills, guided reading is taught explicitly every day from Year 1 onwards.
In EYFS it is introduced formally in the summer term in preparation for the transition to Year 1. Prior to that, inference and comprehension skills are taught in small group shared reading activities.
We use the whole class reading strategy with a focus on VIPERSS skills (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, summarise and sequence). We also incorporate reading fluency teaching in our reading lessons using echo and choral reading.
