Flamingo Bay
EYFS & KS1
Flamingo Bay is a specialist school devised intervention that has been set up specifically to support students with complex needs (particularly learning/ASD/communication difficulties). It is a highly structured nurturing environment where children benefit from individual workstations, TEACCH style individualised approaches and visual timetables. It has an exceptionally high ratio of adults to children and is structured around managing and catering for a small number of students with complex additional needs. The children work on the following:
We typically describe the intervention as ‘getting children ready to learn’ by developing and extending their attention over time through a carefully structured programme of activities utilising evidence and research-based approaches:
Where possible, children are to remain within their base classes when they are able to access the learning on offer. Careful consideration is taken into account for the balance between learning needs and social needs, in order to promote inclusion with their immediate peers and year cohort.
All children will have a transition plan in which there is a view to them accessing the mainstream classroom. On arrival into Bay children may access the intervention for 100% of the school day. By the end of Year 2 we aim to have achieved a minimum of 50% in the mainstream classroom or more.
